Pre-season clean and tidy? How about some simple storage ideas for your workshop or race truck?
As your wiring requirement grows so does your materials stock. RW75, DR25, CRN, CGPT, RNF100…the list goes on.
For the more specialist materials and lower-use items, I like to buy them in 1.2m lengths. An advantage of 4 foot ‘stick’ lengths is that they are not creased by being rolled onto a reel so feeding wires down them is much easier. This includes RNF100 which is a low-cost, high-specification polyolefin heat-shrink. Whilst it is not as robust as DR25 by any measure, it is a great low-cost alternative for those jobs that don’t need the robustness of DR25.
However, you still have to store a wide range of sizes of these unwieldy sticks. An effective method is simple lengths of household waste pipe. In this example I’ve used 12 lengths of 32mm ID waste pipe, cut them to 1.1m, and taped them into a bundle with gaffer tape. Works great on top of a cabinet or stood vertically.
The second tip is for a Wire Reel holder made from solvent welded waste pipe in a rectangle shape, it holds reels of wire very well if you used an internal gap of around 116mm, the reels sit neatly in between the pipe and un-spool easily when the wire is pulled. This works just as well in a race truck drawer as it does on your workbench.
Happy tidying!
