The Professional Starting Point

An introduction to motorsport wire and tooling

If you’re looking at our 2-day Professional Motorsport Wiring Workshops, first come and view our introductory videos looking at wire, sleeving and tooling.

These videos cover a range of motorsport wiring topics, from wire type selection and wire properties to use of professional tooling. These informal discussions get straight to the point and give you an insight the WireTrain way; real world, practical information.

Online, on-demand. Suitable worldwide.

  • Understand why we may select Aviation wire over common automotive wire.
  • Learn not just industry lingo but what the terms actually mean.
  • Dive into common motorsport wire types (44A / 55A / 55M) and understand their properties.
  • We discuss heat shrink properties from shrink ratios, shrink-back and durability
  • Learn a professional approach to crimping + stripping and avoiding common failures

Pro Wiring Workshop

Would you let an amateur welder work on your race car?

Why is training important to you and your team? I often ask if you would you let an amateur welder work on
your race car? Probably not. Surely you want someone with appropriate experience, knowledge, and
training.

Wiring is exactly the same. With the sophistication of racing cars increasing every year, all teams should
have at least a couple of people who have fundamental professional motorsport wiring knowledge and
hands-on experience with professional techniques. This enables you to carry out emergency repairs or
modifications at the track, handle smaller loom builds in-house, manage loom maintenance tasks at the
workshop and reduce your reliance on costly external companies.

Wiring reliability is not a ‘nice to have’. It’s mission critical.

What online gives you

We train people from F1, Formula-E, Sportcars, Private Individuals and everyone inbetween. We only use the industry
relevent materials and tooling.

We are not an on-line training company as we believe that practical skills are best learnt by doing, not by watching.

However we know that choosing to attend our workshops is a commitment in time and cost, so we wanted to invite you into the WireTrain world and get just flavour of what we do.

Module 1 — Motorsport Wiring Overview
  • Why wiring training matters

  • Failure modes and what causes them

Module 2 — Wire Types (Automotive vs Aerospace)
  • Size/weight differences in bundles

  • When the extra cost is worth it

Module 3 — Aerospace Wire Specs (44 vs 55A vs 55M)
  • Temperature, diameter, tensile strength

  • When 55M solves longitudinal breakage

Module 4 — Temperature & Survivability
  • Ambient + current heating effects

  • Why aerospace wire wins in harsh environments

Module 5 — Plating & Corrosion Resistance
  • Tin vs silver plating

  • Service life and harsh environment performance

Module 6 — Tools That Matter
  • Wire strippers (manual vs auto)

  • AutoStrip tool differences (standard vs high-precision blades)

  • Indent tooling overview (DMC vs comparable alternatives)

Module 7 — Heat Shrink & DR25 System
  • Ratios, shrink-back, operating temps

  • Adhesive-lined options + repair use cases

About

John Wedlake, WireTrain Founder

“These days, I try not to be found upside down in a cockpit with a multimeter but old habits die hard”

John is the driving force behind the WireTrain team. From his first role in 1996 with a British Rally Team and then completing university He worked as a support engineer for MoTeC Europe, specialising in the data logging systems and adapter harnesses.

In the two decades since he has progressed through various roles in motorsport, designing, building and supporting motorsport projects around the world. During this time there are not many motorsport disciplines he hasn’t been involved with, at some stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why charge for a video?

In today’s ever-more connected market, there is just so much noise, we can get swamped by random requests. If you have the interest and passion to invest a small sum into your professional knowledge, that tells us everything we need to know about your commitment.

What topics are covered in the course?

The course covers the core fundamentals of professional motorsport wiring,
including:

  • Automotive vs aerospace wire
  • Type 44, 55A and 55M aerospace wire
  • Wire sizing, weight, and bundle considerations
  • Temperature resistance and survivability
  • Wire plating and corrosion resistance
  • Heat shrink systems (including DR25, ratios, shrink-back, adhesives)
  • Wire stripping tools and techniques
  • Indent crimping principles and tooling
  • Common failure modes and how to avoid them

The focus is always on why choices are made in professional environments.

Do I need prior wiring experience?

No prior motorsport wiring experience is required for either this course or our workshops. Both start with the fundamentals and build on existing knowledge so that you can make better decisions around materials and tooling.

Does this course replace the Pro Wiring Workshop?

No – and it’s not intended to. This online course is just a starting point before hands-on training. It gives you complementary background knowledge and context that makes practical workshops more effective and easier to follow for beginners.
Many teams and individuals use this course as:

  • Preparation for hands-on training
  • An introductory or refresher to wiring materials and tooling
  • A way to evaluate interest before investing in tools or workshops
